Vedanta Studies and Yoga Philosophy

The Vedanta and Yoga Course is a comprehensive learning package, drawing study materials from ancient canons of Hindu Philosophy. The syllabus covers a well-researched scope of relevant topics, highlighting the many similarities in the two streams of thought. Both Vedantic and Yogic pursuits understand the individual as vulnerable to sorrows and suffering and explore the way to liberation.

Our esteemed teachers in the school will explain how the notions of “Atman” and “Brahman” in the Yoga and Vedanta Sutras explain the idea of attachment as the root cause of all human sorrows and why it is wrongful to equate “Self” with the physical body, mind or sensual feeling. The study in Vedanta will elucidate the concepts of “maya” or illusion and “mithya” or untruth.

The comparative study of the two philosophies is going to strengthen your conceptual base, and in addition, our teachers will make sure to bring these ideas in relevance in the lived reality. Our teachers preach in simple and comprehensible language, encouraging interactive discussions in the sessions. The Vedantic aspect will bring more clarity to the ideas you have already been nurturing as a yoga enthusiast, and as a future teacher you will be able to impart knowledge more effectively.

The Syllabus

This course will introduce you to some of the canonical texts of Indian philosophy. Originally composed in Sanskrit, the texts will be presented to you in the best interpretations and with appropriate paraphrasing.

Texts
  • Tattwa Bodh and Atma Bodh: Composed by Adi Shankara, the ancient Vedanta guru, these texts are interesting primers on Vedanta philosophy.
  • Vivekachoodamani: This is a poetic rendition by Shankaracharya, elucidating the main tenets of Adwita Vedanta philosophy at length
  • Bhagavat Geeta: The Bhagavat Geeta, considered as the most essential text of the Hindu philosophical cannon, embodies  the core ideas of Vedanta knowledge and is presented in a beautiful poetic form
  • Upanishads: The Upanishads are a literary collection, considered as utterances from the divine, defining the true nature of the Universe and is one of the central sources on Vedanta.
  • Vedic Chanting: An extensive collection of important Vedic mantras will also be a part of the syllabus and will be taught with correct pronunciation and underlying meaning
